Morning Liturgy

Welcome and Announcements

Call to Worship

Leader: The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.

People: The Lord is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed.

Leader: Oh, save your people and bless your heritage!

People: Be their shepherd and carry them forever.

Trinity Hymnal #219 “All Praise to Thee, Eternal Lord”

All praise to thee, eternal Lord,
clothed in a garb of flesh and blood;
choosing a manger for thy throne,
while worlds on worlds are thine alone.

Once did the skies before thee bow;
a virgin's arms contain thee now:
angels who did in thee rejoice
now listen for thine infant voice.

A little child, thou art our guest,
that weary ones in thee may rest;
forlorn and lowly is thy birth,
that we may rise to heav'n from earth.

Thou comest in the darksome night
to make us children of the light,
to make us, in the realms divine,
like thine own angels round thee shine.

All this for us thy love hath done;
by this to thee our love is won:
for this we tune our cheerful lays,
and shout our thanks in ceaseless praise.

REFLECTION ON GOD’S LAW

Leader: Honor your father and your mother.

People: Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right

Leader: You shall not murder.

People: Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

Leader: You shall not commit adultery.

People: Everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Leader: You shall not steal.

People: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.  Do your work quietly and earn your own living.

Leader: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

People: Having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor.

Leader: You shall not covet anything that is your neighbor's.

People: For the whole law is fulfilled in one word:  "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Silent Prayer of Confession

Assurance of Grace

Trinity Hymnal #194 “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here,
until the Son of God appear.

Refrain:
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, thou Lord of might,
who to thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
in ancient times didst give the law
in cloud and majesty and awe. [Refrain]

O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free
thine own from Satan's tyranny;
from depths of hell thy people save,
and give them vict'ry o'er the grave. [Refrain]

O come, thou Dayspring from on high,
and cheer us by thy drawing nigh;
disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
and death's dark shadows put to flight. [Refrain]

O come, thou Key of David, come
and open wide our heav'nly home;
make safe the way that leads on high,
and close the path to misery. [Refrain]

Prayer of the Church

Psalm 119:9-16 “How Can a Young Man Cleanse His Way”

How can a young man cleanse his way?

Let him with care your word obey.

With all my heart I seek for You;

From Your commands let me not stray.

Your word I’ve treasured in my heart

So that from You I will not turn.

That I’ll not sin, O blessed LORD,

Your statutes teach, that I may learn.

I have repeated with my lips

All of the laws Your mouth has told.

I have rejoiced in Your commands

As one delights in purest gold.

I on Your precepts meditate,

And I will ponder all Your ways.

I will delight in Your decrees,

Your word rememb’ring all my days.

PRAYER OF APPLICATION & THE LORD’S PRAYER

Song  “King of Glory”

Christ, the newborn King of glory,
Born in a stable, bound for the throne.

Come and worship, come adore the
Almighty Rock, the Cornerstone.

Chorus: Lift your hands to him in worship.
Lift your voice to him and sing,
“Hosanna in the highest, hosanna to the king!”

Christ, the living King of glory,
Never changing, ever the same.
All of hist’ry is his story,
Constant love, unfailing name. [Chorus]

Christ, the risen King of glory,
Saints acclaim him, angels sing.
Where, O grave, is now thy vict’ry,
Where, O death, is now thy sting? [Chorus]

Words and music: John Watt, 1980

Apostles’ Creed

Words of Institution

Minister: The Lord be with you;

People: And also with you.

Minister: Lift up your hearts;

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God;

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Song –  “Joy Has Dawned”

Joy has dawned upon the world,

Promised from creation:

God's salvation now unfurled,

Hope for ev'ry nation.

Not with fanfares from above,

Not with scenes of glory,

But a humble gift of love:
Jesus born of Mary.

Sounds of wonder fill the sky

With the songs of angels;

As the mighty Prince of Life

Shelters in a stable.

Hands that set each star in place,

Shaped the earth in darkness.

Cling now to a mother's breast,

Vuln’rable and helpless.

Shepherds bow before the Lamb,

Gazing at the glory;

Gifts of men from distant lands

Prophesy the story.

Gold, a King is born today;

Incense, God is with us;

Myrrh, His death will make a way,
By His blood He'll win us.

Son of Adam, Son of heav’n,

Given as a ransom,

Reconciling God and man,

Christ our mighty Champion!

What a Savior, what a Friend,

What a glorious mystery:

Once a babe in Bethlehem,

Now the Lord of history.
